Hip Hop Movements: Cyphers At The Park
“Sittin in the park on a Sunday afternoon
Me and the crew just jammin the oldy tune”
A Lighter Shade Of Brown
Those lyrics could almost describe the happenings of yesterday’s event. These oldie tunes made you want to get up and move your feet though. The turnout was fantastic, with crews like Flight 209, Original Movement, Modesto Skates, Knock Squad, and RoboFunk all coming out to support our youth. Even Zeps from Rhymosaurs made the trip from Stockton. The food was great, the smiles were genuine, and the late summer weather was just right for a Modesto park gathering. It was a fitting homage to the early days of hip hop.
I arrived a little late with my granddaughter Ruby, and this was my first time at an Original Movement Cypher. I was confident Ruby would make new friends, and as we approached, I was greeted by familiar faces and introduced to some who were excited to meet Ruby. There were so many families there. The kids enjoyed the natural shade from the trees and the easy-ups provided for the event, while the parents were full of encouragement and community spirit. Our mentors, Enock, Livic, and Adapt, were there to inspire and uplift the next generation of Central Valley breakers. It was exactly the kind of environment I've always wanted to be a part of. Our kids are so fortunate to have these creative, interactive, artistic, and spirited outlets.
I’ll keep our MAM friends updated on the next event.
